Choose a licence

Choosing the right licence for your project can be hard. If you don't know where to start, we recommend that you use the very permissive "New BSD" licence.

If you know exactly what you want to do, but still need a little help, we recommend that you check out ​OSI, they have an extensive list of licences and describe in detail what each licence means.

Why so few licences?

Of course from our perspective you could choose any licence that you wish, but we thought that too much choice sometimes is not good and can be overwhelming if you don't know exactly what you need. We looked at the OSI licences, i.e. licences that are recognised as open source by an official committee and we picked those that are most popular. If you look at the Open Source world you will discover that 90% if not more of the projects use only a handful of licences. All the other licences were created to meet some special need.
