Files section

The Files section is primarily intended for storing and sharing files with your project team. Typically this will include images, documentation and other files that you do not want to have in your version control system (Source section) or Wiki. It does not include "releases", which are managed through the Downloads System.

Files can be accessed in your Internet browser though the Files tab in your project, or by using a Web-based Distributed Authoring and Versioning (WebDAV) client. Both options are discussed below.

Internet browser

Web browsers provide the most convenient access to files. Through the Files tab it is possible to browse the existing directory structure, download individual files, upload single and multiple files, and delete individual files. It is not possible to create or delete directories, or to delete multiple files (in one go).

Note that what a particular users can do is controlled by the project permissions. The default group permissions give non-members view and download rights, and project members view, download, upload and delete rights.

Adding files

To add a file or files:

  • Navigate to the WebDAV directory in which you want to upload the files.
  • Press the Select files button then browse to and select, the file(s) on your local computer that you want to upload. When you press enter the files are added to the page as "Pending".
  • Finally, select Upload to actually initiate the upload. After all uploads in the queue are finished, the uploaded files are displayed in the file list.

Showing uploading a file Note:

  • You can add more files while an upload is in progress. The upload will continue until there are no files in the queue, and will include all files added after upload started.
  • Do not navigate away from a page during upload (this will leave a partially uploaded file in the directory).

Deleting files

You can remove files, both before and after upload (but not during!), by selecting the remove "X" mark next to the file.

WebDAV clients

WebDAV clients provide a more natural "File manager" interface for managing your project's files. They allow you to do all the things you'd expect from a file manager, including creating and deleting directories and copying, renaming, and moving files (none of which you can do through the web interface).

There are many commercial, free and open source clients. We recommend you use one of these, and list a few of the options in the following section.

Downloadable clients

There are numerous open source and commercial options. We list just a few below:

Native clients

Most modern operating systems offer native integration in the system file manager (e.g. File explorer in Windows or Finder in Mac). See your operating system documentation for usage instructions. We list a few known issues with native clients below.

Windows 7

There are known issues in Windows 7 when mounting a WebDAV share over HTTPS with basic authentication.

The alternative are to:

Mac OS X up to 10.4

Mac OS X did not have native support for WebDAV until version 10.5. If you are using an old version of the operating system you will have to install a client. Please note that Cyberduck supports OS X 10.4 only up to version 3.2.1; the disk image is available for download from their changelog page.

Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)

Apple added native WebDAV support version 10.5.

There have been reports of HTTPS issues. If these occur, we suggest you use one of the clients listed above.

Other Information

Like every other part of Projects, the Files section is store on a secure storage system with regular backups.
